California Rep. Kevin McCarthy has been removed as Speaker of the House of Representatives – the first time in American History a Speaker has essentially lost a no confidence vote and been removed.
It happened because a small group of eight Republicans – led by Rep. Matt Gaetz – voted with all the Democrats to vacate the chair. Gaetz made the motion to vacate the chair.
This is dysfunction of the highest order, and it shows there is a small group of Republicans who put their own petty interests ahead of what is best for the Republican Party and the Nation. Now, there is no focus on Joe Biden’s possible Impeachment, no focus on Hunter Biden’s sleazy business dealings, no focus on inflation and all the disasters of the Biden Administration. Instead, all the focus for the next week or two will be about how the GOP can’t get it’s act together.
It could still turn out for good – what some mean for evil – if the GOP elects Steve Scalise or Jim Jordan as Speaker. But who knows what the outcome will be with the poisoned atmosphere now present within the GOP. Let’s hope for the best.
