Thomas Massie &#8211; the actual member of Congress who led the charge against Paul Ryan when he was Speaker. He is openly saying that Donald Trump&#8217;s attack against Ron DeSantis, claiming DeSantis supported Paul Ryan as Speaker is, &#8220;a joke.&#8221; In fact, Massie is saying it was Trump as President who supported Ryan against him and others who dared to oppose Ryan. Massie is now calling on DeSantis to run against Trump for the GOP Presidential Nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Another member of Congress has called on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to challenge former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination. This time it is Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endorsements are not unusual, but the move by Massie could undercut recent Trump attacks that DeSantis was once a \u201cdisciple\u201d of \u201cRINO loser\u201d former House Speaker Paul Ryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most outspoken libertarian in the House, it was Massie,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/08\/trump-endorses-paul-ryan-226729\">not Trump<\/a>, who opposed Ryan. He was the only Republican to vote against him for speaker, <strong>a move Massie worried \u201cwould attract the wrath of President Trump\u201d because,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/1642899636951085057?s=20\">at the time,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthat\u2019s how strongly Trump had endorsed him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGo back and roll the tape,\u201d Massie told RealClearPolitics, noting how Trump\u2019s endorsement effectively quelled all opposition from the speaker\u2019s right flank. A perennial thorn in the side of GOP leadership, he tried assuaging the anger of the populist president by cribbing his vocabulary. On the floor, Massie said his opposition stemmed only from a desire \u201cto drain the swamp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The current Trump complaint that DeSantis was in cahoots with Ryan while in Congress, Massie said, \u201cis a joke.\u201d He should know.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Massie was one of the so-called \u201cinsurgents\u201d who was regularly at war with Ryan\u2019s predecessor, Speaker John Boehner. He recalled sitting at dinner with then-Rep. DeSantis and rejoicing when news broke that Boehner\u2019s most loyal lieutenant, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, lost his primary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe relished those election results,\u201d Massie said. \u201cWe were both so excited to see Eric Cantor lose!\u201d He said of his former colleague, a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, \u201cRon wasn\u2019t a fan of any of [GOP House] leadership.\u201d . . . . <\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/articles\/2023\/04\/06\/massie_says_trump_is_wrong_about_desantis_149079.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RealClearPolitics<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interesting insight from GOP Rep.
