The vaunted Ukrainian &#8220;Counteroffensive&#8221; is apparently not going so well, after being touted for months by Joe Biden and others. It is a total stalemate with Russia in the East, with little chance of a major change before Winter. U.S. Public support for continuing to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into Ukraine is fading, with now more Americans opposing it than supporting it. It&#8217;s time to end the carnage there. It will only happen when the U.S. makes it clear to Zelensky that the money train is going to end. If these are the assessments being shared publicly &#8211; how bad must they actually be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Western allies get \u2018sobering\u2019 update on Ukraine counteroffensive\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kyaALHVnEW8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Weeks into Ukraine\u2019s highly anticipated counteroffensive, Western officials describe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/01\/europe\/ukraine-neskuchne-question-counteroffensive-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasingly \u201csobering\u201d assessments&nbsp;<\/a>about Ukrainian forces\u2019 ability to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/27\/europe\/ukraine-counteroffensive-push-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">retake significant territory<\/a>, four senior US and western officials briefed on the latest intelligence told CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still going to see, for the next couple of weeks, if there is a chance of making some progress. But for them to really make progress that would change the balance of this conflict, I think, it\u2019s extremely, highly unlikely,\u201d a senior western diplomat told CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur briefings are sobering. We\u2019re reminded of the challenges they face,\u201d said Rep. Mike Quigley, an Illinois Democrat who recently returned from meetings in Europe with US commanders training Ukrainian armored forces. \u201cThis is the most difficult time of the war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary challenge for Ukrainian forces is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/04\/europe\/ukraine-counteroffensive-slow-progress-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continued difficulty of breaking<\/a>&nbsp;through Russia\u2019s multi-layered defensive lines in the eastern and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/29\/europe\/ukraine-counteroffensive-south-push-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">southern parts of the country<\/a>, which are marked by tens of thousands of mines and vast networks of trenches. Ukrainian forces have incurred staggering losses there, leading Ukrainian commanders to hold back some units to regroup and reduce casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRussians have a number of defensive lines and they [Ukrainian forces] haven\u2019t really gone through the first line,\u201d said a senior Western diplomat. \u201cEven if they would keep on fighting for the next several weeks, if they haven\u2019t been able to make more breakthroughs throughout these last seven, eight weeks, what is the likelihood that they will suddenly, with more depleted forces, make them?
